The Lake Country Sun s first issue was in September 1987 and in October 1987 Hook Williams began publishing The Sun as a twice-monthly tabloid. Graham Newspapers Inc., a subsidiary of MediaNews Group Inc., purchased The Sun in 1989. Publisher Jim Gray was succeeded in 1998 by Roy Robinson. The Sun continued its tabloid format until January 2001 when it became a broadsheet publication. In June 2002 the newspaper began publishing weekly to serve the scenic Possum Kingdom Lake area and Palo Pinto County. In its first year of eligibility for participation in the Better Newspaper Contests, The Sun received 12 awards from North and East Texas Press Association, West Texas Press Association and Texas Press Association.
