Possum Nibble is a judging of appetizers prepared and judged at each cook site. Saturday begins with the pick-up of containers from the chamber at 10 a.m. Salsa and Bloody Marys will be turned in at 11; beans and ribs at noon; chili and pork butt at 1:15 p.m.; and brisket and cobbler at 2:30. The silent auction will be open 1-3:15 p.m. Saturday and the live auction will begin at 4 followed by the benefit drawing and awards. The benefit drawing prize is a 2013 E-Z Go Sport Golf Cart valued at $7,500. Tickets for the drawing are priced at $20. "Possum Fest is the largest fund-raiser for the chamber," said Carolyn Land, co-chair of the donation committee. "I'm not sure but I believe the live and silent auctions bring in about half of the funds raised." She explained that, from the Possum Fest proceeds, donations are made to Charlie's Angels Senior Center, the Possum Kingdom East VFD, PK West VFD, PK East EMS and PK West EMS. In addition, the chamber holds the annual Easter egg hunt, Halloween Truck or Treat and Christmas with Santa. In addition, there is maintenance and costs for the chamber building. "Who would have thought when the chamber building was erected what it has become," she said. "It serves as a focal point for community efforts." She recalled the fires of 2011 when the chamber building was a collection point for donations, meal preparation and more. "It's such a nice facility," Land added. While donations are coming in, she said there is always a need so the chamber can offer more back to the community. "We don't know what people have or what connections they have that could help us get auction items," she explains. "If people have the ability or the connection to get a good donation item, we would certainly like to know." For information, call the chamber, 940-779-2424.
