The Possum Kingdom East Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a blood drive with Carter BloodCare 2-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at Observation Point, Possum Kingdom Lake. This event is for the benefit of Kyndal Reece Newsom, 2; Joshlynn Wilson, a single mother; and Danna Grissom Crowley, a mother and former employee at Mr. C's. Each is undergoing critical medical care and will be in need of transfusions. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Brazos River Authority Chief Lake Ranger Robert Box at 940-329-9596. January is "Coca-Cola and Walgreens" month at Carter BloodCare. Everyone who gives blood in January receives a voucher for a complimentary Coca-Cola product, plus a mini Coca-Cola football. Potential blood donors can volunteer beginning at age 16 with a parent's consent, and 17 can give independently. There is no upper age limit for giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID each time they give. It's also a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood. For more information about donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call Carter BloodCare at 800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org. Six hundred to 800 patients every day require a blood transfusion and most of them receive more than one unit of blood.
