The Palo Pinto County Historical Association and the Old Settlers Reunion joined together for a celebration of life on the frontier Saturday.
The Old Settlers Reunion began at 11 a.m. and culminated with a melodrama, "Palo Pinto Pioneerin'."
Characters included Margaret Vaughn, played by Frana Patterson; outlaw Rube Burrow, played by Ray Patterson; settler Reuben Vaughn, husband of Margaret, played by Terry Murphy; Big Foot Wallace, Texas Ranger and explorer, played by Bill Reagan; and the Rev. George Slaughter, portrayed by Ronnie Patterson.
The play was set in the late 1800s, with the Vaughn's home the center of action as various visitors stopped by the kitchen of Margaret Vaughn.
Following the play, officers were elected for the coming year including Reagan as president, Ray Patterson, vice president; and Madge Patterson, secretary.
Awards are presented annually for a number of categories.
Oldest man in attendance: Lester Beatty, 95.
Oldest woman in attendance: Jean Mansell. 78.
Married the longest: Rex and Jean Mansell, 51 years.
Traveled the farthest to attend" Scott Reagan and Tracey Martin, Dallas.
Largest family attending: The Patterson family.
Youngest attending: Benjamin McClintock, 7 months.
"I thought it went very, very well," Reagan said.
The Frontier Day celebration featured music and craft displays including a blacksmith, rag doll making and quilting.
On the square, an antique car show featured a number of vintage autos.
The Old Settlers Reunion dates back to the 19th century when it was often a two-day event with vendors and entertainment for families. The intent was to honor the early settlers of Palo Pinto County.
The Frontier Day and Old Settlers Reunion is held annually on the first Saturday in June.
