Remember sitting in front of the TV all afternoon and watching all those great Disney shows?
There was "Saved By the Bell," "90210," "Degrassi," "Hannah Montana," "Wizards of Waverly Place," "That's So Raven," and many, many more.
This was a daily routine in my house as my children were growing up. Everybody gathered around the TV after school and got all caught up in the drama and excitement of those teenage stars.
What happens to those stars when they become too old for their TV roles and can no longer entertain the younger generations? Obviously, if the children who watched them are growing up, then so are the stars. So they move on to bigger shows and movies.
For the most part, seeing the young stars grow up and make it even bigger on the screen has been fun and exciting. For instance, Zack and Kelly, from "Saved By The Bell," have become very popular and respected adult actors and actresses. Jennie Garth, Hilary Duff and Emma Watson are a few more who went from adolescent to adult in show biz.
On the down side, there are some who went from pre-teen stars to adult icons in a not-so-respectable manner - such as Hannah Montana, Selena Gomez and Lindsay Lohan. Are these actresses still the role models that we want our children looking up to?
As a parent it saddens me and disheartens the young people who witnessed the transformation of these beautiful actresses into who they are today.
It is a tough job to make sure what is shown on TV doesn't become reality for our children.
Sit down with these youngsters who are so impressionable and explain what these actors and actresses are doing and why.
Explain that the behaviors and wardrobes are not acceptable and that it takes away from one's self respect and self dignity. Teach them that they do not have to follow in these star's footsteps to succeed and that they are beautiful just the way they are.
