John Whitley was named 2013 Volunteer of the Year at the Santo Volunteer Fire and EMS annual Christmas and Awards Banquet Saturday. Whitley, 81, has served the department for over 19 years. He is a firefighter and EMT and was also named among the top five volunteers who have responded to calls for assistance. He is a bus driver for Santo Independent School District. "John can tell you exactly when he picks up a student, always knows exactly where he is or can use his smart phone to give exact location and has never called in to have substitute drive his route," Santo ISD Superintendent Greg Gilbert, guest speaker for the evening, said. Among the comments that were made on his nomination by fellow department members were, "humble," "always gives 110 percent," "great ambulance driver," "great leader," and "patient and thoughtful of others." "We are proud to have John Whitley as the 2013 Santo Volunteer Fire and EMS Volunteer of the Year," noted Cyndi Smith, Santo VFD assistant public information officer.
