The annual Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce Mardi Gras celebration begins with a parade which kicks off at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 1.
The big party begins at 6 p.m. at the chamber building, 362 N. FM 2353, on PK's East Side.
The annual celebration attracts hundreds of people to the lake to enjoy a day full of celebration and visiting with friends in anticipation of summer.
There is no charge to enter the parade, but those entering must complete an entry form.
That form is available on line at www.possumkingdomlake.com.
First-, second- and third-place awards are given to floats in both the business and individual categories. Those awards are presented at the Shrimp Peel that evening.
Tickets for the shrimp peel are available at the chamber office and from chamber board members. The Mardi Gras menu includes shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob, rice, beans, new potatoes and tea.
Those wanting to attend should purchase tickets early. Tickets are $22, $15 for seniors 62 and over and $10 for children 10 and under. Tickets are non-refundable.
Others who want to chance getting a ticket at the door are encouraged to call the chamber office, 940-779-2424, March 1 for availability.
The evening includes music, the best-costumes contest - with first-, second- and third-place awards given for adult and child costumes - and the crowning of King Possum and Queen Carp, who reign over the festivities for the coming year.
The current King Possum and Queen Carp are Ronnie Ranft and his wife, Diane.
Again this year, the Crawdaddies Band will provide music.
For those needing party masks, beads and more, the Mardi Gras store at the PK chamber is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Beads, throws, parade decorations, hats and masks are on sale. The store will also be open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, March 1.
"We accept cash, credit cards or checks," said Pam Wheat, executive assistant.
