According to state records, Palo Pinto County ranks third in the state for child abuse cases.
April is child abuse awareness and prevention month. That, and recent coverage of an injury to a child trial in the area brings this issue to the forefront. While statistically, cases nationwide have dropped, incidents in this county have continued to rise.
There are options, however, when a parent feels unable to care for his or her child.
One such option, The Safe Haven, also called the Moses Law provides a way out for parents of newborns without fear of prosecution.
"Although it is a very extreme step," said Marissa Gonzales, spokeswoman for Child Protective Services. "Someone who has no support system and limited options can use this as a way to avoid legal ramifications and ensure the child is safe."
