The annual Septemberfest opens today with its first annual BBQ Cook-off. The cook-off, scheduled for today and tomorrow, Friday and Saturday, in downtown Graford, is in addition to the annual Jackrabbit 5K run. The divisions for the cook-off, each with a $15 entry fee, are beans, Dutch-oven dessert, half chicken, pork ribs, pork butt and brisket. Check in will be 1-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, and 6:30 a.m.-8 a.m. Saturday. A cooks meeting will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday. Pits must be lit by 9 a.m. Plaques will be awarded for first- through third-place in all divisions. There will also be a showmanship trophy for best of show. For information, contact Robert Ray, 940-445-1639. As in years past, the 5K will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and there will be activities the entire day. Awards for the race will be given at 10 a.m. Free watermelon and juice will be provided. The race course is certified by Charles Kline but will not be professionally timed. Kay Lynn Bridges explained that last year, the 5K was run the same weekend as the TRIFECTA Triathlon at Possum Kingdom Lake, thus reducing the cost. This year, the triathlon was a week earlier than Graford's run. "The additional expenses for travel were too much," Bridges said. Trophies will be awarded for the top three men and women finishers, medals and ribbons will be awarded to division winners and T-shirts will be given to the first 100 entries.
