The Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce Possum Fest & Great Outdoors BBQ & Chili Cook-off festivities begin today, Friday, and continue tomorrow, Saturday For Saturday's live auction, there are some great items that will be up for bids. Carolyn Land, co-chair of the donation committee, said there are some new items being offered this year. "Naylor by the Water will offer the party barge for 20 people for four hours, with dinner," she said. "There are Cowboy tickets with dinner and a shuttle to the stadium. "There is also the fish fryer and, new this year, an electric rotisserie." There is also OU-Texas Tech club seats at Norman, Okla., with a two-night stay. "There's all kinds of food coupons from restaurants at PK, Graham and Mineral Wells," Land added. Another feature will be the Picture Picks in the silent auction - 30 photos of Hell's Gate before the lake. Land explained that the name of the winning bidder on each of the pictures will be placed in a drawing for a mini iPad. The photos and drawing are sponsored by Pondera, Land added. Part of the proceeds from the event go to donations to Charlie's Angels Senior Center, the Possum Kingdom East VFD, PK West VFD, PK East EMS and PK West EMS. At noon today, meat inspections will begin. Cooking can start after the meat is inspected. From 6 to 8 p.m., there will be a Possum Nibble and margarita contest, and from 5-11, there will be a jam session at Possum Gulch. From 7-9 p.m. the cow-chip throwing contest will be held. Beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, tickets will be sold for $1 each for samples from those participating in the "Real Taste of Possum Fest." Each participating cook's location will be identified and numbered. Cooks can set their own prices in $1 increments - i.e., hot dog, two coupons; french fries, one. Those participating can set their own hours and their own menu. Accepting cash and selling alcohol are both prohibited. At 3 p.m. Saturday, cooks can turn in tickets for 50 percent of the sale price. The one with the most tickets wins the People's Choice Award. Possum Nibble is a judging of appetizers prepared and judged at each cook site. Saturday begins with the pick-up of containers from the chamber at 10 a.m. Salsa and Bloody Marys will be turned in at 11; beans and ribs at noon; chili and pork butt at 1:15 p.m.; and brisket and cobbler at 2:30. The silent auction will be open from 1 to 3:15 p.m. Saturday, and the live auction will begin at 4, followed by the benefit drawing and awards. The benefit drawing prize is a 2013 E-Z Go Sport Golf Cart valued at $7,500. Tickets for the drawing are priced at $20. "Possum Fest is the largest fund-raiser for the chamber," Land said. "I'm not sure but I believe the live and silent auctions bring in about half of the funds raised." For information, call the chamber, 940-779-2424.
