Retired Col. Willie Casper passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014, in a Mineral Wells hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 6, at First Baptist Church, Mineral Wells. Burial will follow at Woodland Park Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home.
“He was the ultimate public relations guy,” said Mary Creighton, who worked with Casper on numerous committees.
“When I started doing work on Camp Wolters for a historical marker he was very helpful.”
She explained that he was also very knowledgeable about the history of the fort after it received that designation.
“He was always there with his smile,” she added.
A fixture in Mineral Wells for over 40 years, he retired from the U.S. Army at Fort Wolters in 1971 with 24 years of active service and five years reserve.
After his service, he was the public relations officer of First National Bank for 15 years. He served for many years as a volunteer for Boyce Ditto Public Library and the Mineral Wells ISD and was mayor of Mineral Wells from 1986-92.
Casper was a member of numerous organizations where he served as a member, president or chairman of the board. Those organizations included Palo Pinto County Easter Seal Society, Boyce Ditto Library board, Mineral Wells Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Palo Pinto County United Fund, and chairman of the Palo Pinto Sesquicentennial Military Committee.
He was also involved in the Palo Pinto Chapter of the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Texas Division, and the Palo Pinto Agricultural Worker Council.
